Frederick H. Schamber

Frederick H. Schamber, 83, of Murrysville, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 25, 2024. He was born on August 31, 1940, in Wisner, Nebraska, the son of the late Herold and Irene (Schutte) Schamber.

He graduated from Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska, in 1963 and went on to get a Ph D in nuclear physics at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He spent most of his career designing scientific instruments, and as an expert in the fields of scanning electron microscopes and methods to determine the elemental composition and concentrations in a sample (quantitative EDS). He received many awards for contributions in his field including the Microbeam Analysis Society’s Presidential Award for “Outstanding Scientific Contributions to the Theory and Practice of Microbeam Analysis,” and is listed as an inventor on fourteen US patents.

He was a long-time member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Export, PA, serving many years on the Church Council as well as teaching Bible Classes. He and his wife were leaders for the Northeast area of Lutheran Marriage Encounter, an international program designed to enrich marriages. For 22 years they organized weekends, were part of presenting teams, and served a term as national officers.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Julie, daughter Pamela (Douglas Franz) Schamber and two grandchildren of Anchorage, AK; daughter Kimberly (Jack Dunietz) Schamber who divide their time between homes in NYC and Vail, CO; and son Douglas (Jennifer Feder) Schamber and two grandchildren who reside in Plum, PA. He is also survived by his brother, John Schamber of Fort Wayne, IN.
