Amber Elizabeth Stanko (Latta), 81, of Murrysville, passed away on December 10, 2025, in Monroeville, PA. Amber was born on September 16, 1944, in New Stanton, PA. She graduated from Hempfield High School in 1962. After graduation, Amber received her nursing certificate from The Washington Hospital School of Nursing (Washington, PA) in 1965. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 1972 and her master’s degree in Cardiovascular Nursing in 1980, both from the University of Pittsburgh.
Amber was dedicated to the nursing profession throughout her career. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she taught nursing at Shadyside Hospital until October 1979 and the birth of her daughter, Elizabeth. She returned to Shadyside Hospital as a Clinical Coordinator and then served as Clinical Director of Cardiovascular Nursing. She completed her career at HealthSouth Greater Pittsburgh Rehab Hospital in Monroeville, where she worked as Director of Nursing and Regional Director of Nursing.
Amber is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Nathan Larose) of Boston, MA; her brother, Ivan Latta (Kathy) of Millsboro, DE; her sisters, Lois Bennett (Dick) of Irwin and Marilyn Hartland (Bob) of Pittsburgh; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years and true partner in life, Michael Stanko, as well as her parents, Paul and Julia Latta.
Amber was an amazing wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and a successful career woman who embraced all parts of life. She was an avid reader, enjoyed singing and playing the piano from an early age, and loved gardening. The tomatoes and flowers she and her husband cultivated were cherished additions to their beautiful home—especially by the deer who frequently visited their backyard. She loved sports—attending football games in high school, cheering on the Steelers, and traveling with her family to Penn State games for many years, including several memorable away and bowl games. She also loved playing and watching tennis. Along with Michael, she attended all four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, creating cherished memories they carried with them always. She will be loved and greatly missed by her family, friends, neighbors, and everyone who knew her. She will forever be a part of our lives and for that we are eternally grateful.
A viewing will be held at Hart Funeral Home in Murrysville, PA, on Saturday, December 13th from 2–5 PM. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Blood Science Foundation, or the Murrysville Community Library Foundation.
