Born on July 23, 1930, in Newlonsburg (Murrysville), the son of the late Clement F. and Catherine (Rodgers) Schlenke. He was a 1948 graduate of Franklin Township High School and a 1958 graduate of Carnegie Tech (Carnegie Mellon University) where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. Prior to attending college, he served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Carl was employed by West Penn Power Company (Allegheny Power) for 37 years, serving in various engineering and management positions in Jeannette, Butler, New Kensington, St. Mary’s, State College, and Washington, PA. In 1991 he was appointed as Director of Engineering and Construction and retired in 1995 as Assistant to the President of Allegheny Power. During his employment and retirement years he was active in community and service organizations, including the Murrysville Historical Society, earning recognition and many awards.
He was an active member of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Murrysville. The parish was founded by his parents and five other families. He served as an altar boy in his youth and a Eucharistic Minister and server for funeral masses following retirement.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Judith (Fink) Schlenke, infant daughter, Janet Elizabeth Schlenke, his brother, and best friend, Bernard (Mike) Schlenke, and sisters Marie (Ken) Nellis, Betty (Clifford) Baughman, and Alice (Len) Laurich.
He is survived by his dear daughters, Carla Schlenke of Jacksonville, FL, Karen Brown of West Chester, PA, and Gretchen Harrison of Parker, CO; beloved grandchildren Amelia Brown, Eric (Taylor) Brown, Emily (Jake) van Bramer, and Matthew (Tatum) Harrison; and great-grandsons Archer Brown and Lucas van Bramer. Also surviving are cherished sister-in-law, Carole Schlenke, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and family friends. He will also be remembered fondly by the beloved members of the Karl Schlenke family of Hoxter, Germany.
In this time of sorrow, Carl’s family will recall his legacy of devotion to family and friends, honor, faith, integrity and having a sense of humor. In his final days, his wisdom was simply stated, “Just be good.”
