Cherie Syrko, formerly of Murrysville, passed away July 3, at Juniper Village in Monroeville. She was born June 1, 1939, at the Adrian Hospital, Punxsutawney, daughter of the late Dr. James T. Carlino and Marjorie Sheridan Carlino. In addition to her parents, Cherie is preceded in death by her husband Peter M. Syrko; her son, Peter J. Syrko (P.J.); and a brother James V. Carlino. Cherie is survived by her sister, Gretta (Dennis) Afton, one nephew, Jeff (Monica) Carlino, two nieces Cherie (Dave) Shuberg; Kim (Bob) Lewis; one grandnephew, Devin Shuberg, and one grandniece, Halle Lewis. To say that Cherie will be greatly missed is an understatement. Cherie was an upbeat caring person who put lots of love into everything she did. She was a woman of strong faith who love her church and studying the bible. Cherie had a zest for life, cherishing being a wife, mother, caregiver, friend and active member of her church. The Compassionate Friends, Pittsburgh Chapter was an important part of Cherie’s life. She loved people and animals, especially her pets, the latest being “Pumpkin”, her dear cat.
Cherie was a 1957 graduate of Reynoldsville High School. In 1961 she completed the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and then a Master of Arts In Sociology from Duquesne University. This was followed by a lifelong career as an R.N. in various positions in health services: a medical surgery nurse at St. Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh, head psychiatric nurse at Leach Farm Veterans Mental Hospital, a visiting nurse and stroke care coordinator for the V.N.A. and the bereavement coordinator for Heartland Hospice, retiring from nursing in 2013 at age 72. Cherie taught student nurses, and spoke on stroke care at various nursing conferences. She loved the field of nursing, as well as those she cared for.
Cherie enjoyed being with people and had fun doing line dancing, going to yard sales and craft shows, being a Steelers fan, and volunteering, tending her flowers, reading, studying the bible, doing water aerobics, conducting the grief support program at her church, and more recently participating in various activities at Juniper Village at Monroeville where she made many friends and experienced a kind and caring staff. She loved her family, her friends, her faith, learning new things, and being kind to “all creatures great and small.” A loving, generous, fun, always interesting person who made her world a better place.
