Edward Michael Long, Sr., 90, a 58-year resident of Holiday Park, in Plum Boro, PA., passed away Sunday, November 10, 2024. Born March 31,1934 in Blawnox, PA, son of the late Samuel Edward and Frances (Clark) Long.
As a youth Ed loved the outdoors and was a Pittsburgh Field Club golf caddy affording him the opportunity to learn and enjoy the game. He was a proud recipient of the American Legion award and graduated in 1952 from Aspinwall high school. Ed married the love of his life, Dee, on November 25, 1955. They met in Blawnox as teenagers and became close during her time visiting and staying a summer with relatives. A year after their marriage he was drafted and proudly served in the U.S. Army, reporting to Fort Knox, KY, Fort Campbell, KY, 101st Airborne training and then stationed at Fort Benning, GA. He finished active duty, December 1958, and spent 4 years in the National Guard reserves, receiving his honorable discharge in 1962. Ed worked at Blawnox Steel Fabricating Company, opened a State Farm Insurance office and eventually began his 23-year career at Gulf Research and Development Company as Maintenance Supervisor until its shutdown. He continued working until his retirement from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary as Physical Plant Director. In retirement, Ed became a certified locksmith and continued enjoying his other lifelong hobbies of his vegetable garden, his home improvement projects, Benedum and Palace Theatre events, reading, and visiting family in Las Vegas, Nevada. Family was always a focal point for Ed and over the years he could be seen at his sons’, granddaughter’s and grandsons’ special and sports events and hosting family reunions and luncheons with his wife, Dee.
Ed is survived by his wife Dolores (Stinebiser) Long, sons, Edward, Jr. (Michelle), Douglas (Sharon), his four grandchildren, Morgan Long, Randall Long, Dr. Stephen Long and Eric (Shannon) Long and great grandson, Elliot Long. He is also survived by his two sisters, Thelma (Earl, deceased) Bishop and Rita (R. Mike Franklin) Long. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 14, 2024, at Hart Funeral Home. Inc. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 15, 2024, at Holiday Park United Methodist Church, Plum, PA. PLEASE MEET DIRECTLY AT CHURCH.
