Eleanor S. Hemphill, 85, of Murrysville, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026, at UPMC McKeesport Hospital. She was born September 21, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Gustaf A. and Gerda K. (Svensson) Swanson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth Hemphill, and her brother, Leonard G. Swanson, Sr.
Eleanor graduated from Riverside High School in Painesville, Ohio in 1958. She was very active in the Riverside Class of ‘58 reunions. She earned an associate’s degree in business administration from the Community College of Allegheny County in Monroeville. She retired in 1991 as an administrative assistant at Gulf Oil in Pittsburgh.
During her retirement Eleanor and her fiancé John traveled to Alaska, the United Kingdom and took an extended train trip in the Western US and Canada. They did yearly trips to Niagara Falls during the fourth of July. They enjoyed weekly dinners at their favorite local restaurants. They had a Christmas tradition of going to Oglebay, West Virginia to take in the Festival of Lights. Eleanor had a wonderful time traveling and exploring with John.
Eleanor is survived by her two nephews, Leonard (Mary Alice) Swanson Jr. and Mark (Emily) Swanson; her fiancé John T. Carson; her grand-niece Lyla, and grand-nephews Jacob and Henry.
A Committal Service for Eleanor will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. at Murrysville Cemetery.
