Jean-Paul Marc Vergnes, 85, of Verona, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, at Arden Courts in Monroeville, in the company of his daughters and close friends.
Jean-Paul was born on November 15, 1939, in Auch Gers, France to father, Jean Vergnes and mother, Eveline Vergnes (née Eldin). His parents and elder brother, Jacques Vergnes, preceded him in death. He is survived by his older sister, Françoise Bromberg (North Carolina); his two daughters, Alicia Landon (Kentucky) and Dominique Vergnes (New York); a granddaughter, Eveline Landon; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his dear friend and long-time companion, Romaine Miller.
Jean-Paul immigrated to the US in 1964, moving to be with his sister in Boston, Massachusetts. He made use of his excellent hearing working in quality control for Boston Acoustics. He moved to Pittsburgh and worked as a biochemistry technician at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Biological Sciences for nearly a decade before moving to the Ophthalmology Research Laboratory at Eye & Ear Hospital in 1975. He continued working in biomedical research until his retirement from UPMC in 2012.
Jean-Paul devoted himself to many hobbies, which he mastered with careful study and dedicated practice. These include windsurfing, woodworking, drawing, playing the flute, ballet, ballroom dancing, ice skating, skiing, gardening, road and mountain biking. When he wasn’t honing his many talents, he was generously sharing his knowledge with others, teaching with patience, and kindness. He frequently spent the months of April and October windsurfing the waters off Hatteras Island, North Carolina.
He was a patron of the arts and attended regular performances of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts; the Pittsburgh Symphony at Heinz Hall; chamber music at the Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh and enjoyed viewing modern dance performances of the Pittsburgh Dance Council at the Byham Theater.
