Joan Serra Obituary

Joan C. Serra, 99, of Murrysville, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2025. She was born November 5, 1925, in Pittsburgh, daughter of the late Regis and Mary (Foley) Cunningham. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Guy Serra; a son, Gregory Serra, grandson, Vincent Moser, and countless other loving siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Before starting a family, Joan was employed by American Bridge and The Weather Bureau. After marrying Guy, she began her life as a wife and mother. She was always known for being a care-giver for many, both family and friends.

Joan was a member of Mother of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church in Murrysville. Prior to her time at MOS, she was a very active member of St. John the Baptist de la Salle Church in Delmont, where she enjoyed helping out with many activities. She especially enjoyed volunteering at the church festivals. Her consecration to the Blessed Mother inspired her to join the Rosary Altar Christian Mothers Society as a very energetic participant. Her devotion to praying the rosary was passed on to her children.

She had a love for gardening and flowers which drew her to the local garden club. This, too, was something she shared with her family. She especially enjoyed entertaining, whether it was card clubs, family gatherings, or birthday dinners for family and friends. Those closest to her knew of her love for scrabble. She treasured celebrating her Irish heritage on St. Patrick’s Day and throughout the year. She would eventually travel to Ireland with her dear sister and niece.

Joan is survived by four children, Lisa (Dobie) Moser, Christina (Bob) Markley, Patrick (Leanne) Serra, and Anita (Ray) Valotta; 19 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Patricia Kenney, and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own children.

The family would like to thank the staff at William Penn Senior Suites and Heartland Hospice for the compassionate care they provided during her stay.
