Lawrence Philip Hanley, of Trafford PA, formerly of Murrysville, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, and coach, Larry lived a life of service, integrity, and unwavering commitment to those he loved and the community he served. Larry was born August 17, 1941, in Pittsburgh, PA to Lawrence and Catherine (Winkle) Hanley. He attended Crafton High School (now Carlynton). In high school, he played varsity baseball and football. He attended Indiana University of PA where he continued playing football, graduating in 1965 and earning a degree in education. He went onto earn a Master's in Education in 1968 and later, a Secondary Administration Certification from Duquesne University in 1973.
Larry’s career in education and athletics spanned more than three decades, the majority of which he spent at Gateway School District. Starting in 1965, he served as a Social Studies teacher, football and baseball coach, and later, as Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Gateway Senior High School. His legacy at Gateway is immeasurable. For 33 of Gateway’s 42 years at the time of his retirement, Larry was a driving force behind the school’s athletic successes and traditions. Under his leadership, Gateway’s athletic program grew significantly, adding several new sports and providing countless opportunities for student-athletes. In 2001, Larry’s lifelong dedication to youth athletics earned him a place in the Gateway Sports Hall of Fame. He also served for many years as Executive Director of the WPIAL and held key leadership roles on its Board of Control, including six years as vice president and six as president. Larry was an influential voice in the PIAA and WPIAL Athletic Directors Association, always advocating for fairness, opportunity, and the student-athlete experience until his retirement in 2006.
His favorite memories were times spent at the beach with family, especially Hilton Head and time with friends on the golf course. Despite all his professional accomplishments, Larry was most proud of the life he built with his beloved wife, Jane Marie (Barr) Hanley, who preceded him in death in 2019. Married for 54 years, they shared a love grounded in faith, family, and mutual support through every season of life--including caring for their son, Brian, after a life-altering accident in 2006. Brian, who passed earlier this year, was a source of immense pride for Larry. He is also preceded in death by his infant granddaughter, Madison Hanley.
Larry is survived by his loving daughters, Deanne (Greg) Bauer and Janene (Chad) Clark; and his nine cherished grandchildren, Cameron and Brandon Hanley; Connor, Brendan, Jack, and Brynn Bauer; Ryan, Aidan, and Lauren Clark. He is also survived by his sister, Nan Horan, and many nieces, nephews, former students, colleagues, and lifelong friends.
A man of wisdom, humility, and quiet leadership, Larry and most vivid memories weren't about his own accolades—but rather about moments shared with teams, coaches, and students, like Gateway's legendary 1969 WPIAL Championship football win over Altoona. He always preferred to be behind the scenes, solving problems, lifting others up, and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. Larry’s legacy will live on in the generations of students he influenced, the athletic programs he helped shape, and the family he cherished beyond all else.
A private family service will be held to celebrate Larry’s remarkable life. As Larry was a proud Irishman, please find time to gather with friends and honor him with a toast.
