Paul F. Pittman, 92, of Murrysville, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2022, at his home. He was born October 7, 1930, in Pittsburgh, PA, son of the late G. Frank and Anna Fertig Pittman. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Pittman and a brother, G. Frank (Kathryn) Pittman Jr.
Paul was the embodiment of an engineer. He began tinkering with electrical devices as a young boy and never lost his love for the subject, obtaining a BS, MS, and PhD in Electrical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon (then Carnegie Institute of Technology). His time at college was interrupted by service in the Korean War, where he worked on mobile radar installations. After finishing his degrees, he spent his entire career at Westinghouse Research, working on solid-state devices, molecular systems, photovoltaics, power electronics and satellite technology, registering numerous patents along the way. In 1973, his team designed the solar “wings” for Skylab, the first American space station.
After retirement, Paul took great pleasure in working at Village Hardware, where he continued to fix electrical appliances and lamps for customers, family, and friends, and he volunteered with VITA doing taxes for those who needed help. Paul served on the Board of Elders at Beulah Presbyterian Church for decades and recently attended Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church in Murrysville.
Paul will be sorely missed by his four daughters, Diane (Faye) Pittman, Susan Pittman, Nancy (James) Behrenberg, and Ann Pittman; six grandchildren, Matyas (Vanessa) Kovach, Cory (Nikki) Ramos, Jaime Ramos, Brett Behrenberg, Ella Pittman, and Chrissy Carter; six great-grandchildren: Matyas Jr., Dominik, and Kinga Kovach, and Roman, Sebastian and Julian Ramos; also a niece and two nephews.
