Richard V. Woodward

Richard Verne Woodward, aged 87, passed away peacefully on June 6th, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Carol Lee Anderson Woodward, with whom he shared 64 beautiful years of marriage since their wedding in 1961.

The only child of the late Verne and Willa Woodward, Richard grew up in the Pittsburgh area, graduating from Penn Hills High School in 1956. He went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh, earning his degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1960.

In 1961, he launched a dedicated, 40-year career with the Rockwell Manufacturing Company as a Research Engineer. His work later took him, Carol, and his son, Kent, to DuBois, Pennsylvania, as the company evolved through several transitions. A brilliant mind in his field, he was the co-owner of four U.S. Patents, notably designing a highly efficient water meter before his retirement in 2000. 

Throughout his life, faith and community were central. While living in Delmont, he was an active member of Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church. During their years in DuBois, he dedicated his time to Lakeside United Methodist Church, where he served faithfully as the Financial Secretary. In 2016, he and Carol moved to the Redstone Highlands Community in Murrysville, where they happily rejoined Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church.

Always ready for their next great journey, Richard and Carol loved to travel. They kicked off their 64-year marriage with a beautiful honeymoon in Jamaica, setting the stage for a lifetime of exploration. Over the years, their road trips took them from the bright lights of Las Vegas and the space coast of Cape Canaveral straight to the gates of Graceland. True fans at heart, they also thoroughly enjoyed setting sail on multiple Elvis-themed cruises.

At Redstone, he was known for his sharp wit and social spirit. A lifelong strategist, he loved playing Chess, Scrabble, and Poker. He famously started a poker class at Redstone, thoroughly enjoying his weekly games with a dedicated group of ladies. He was a regular at happy hours and dinners, deeply treasuring the close friendships he made there.

His intellect extended to the stars; as a member of the Planetary Society, he maintained a lifelong fascination with astronomy and space travel and was an avid reader of science fiction. He was also a passionate jazz enthusiast, boasting an extensive record collection and always counting Dave Brubeck as his absolute favorite.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Woodward, his daughter, Michelle Walters (Jim), his son, Kent, (Jamie Lough) and a community of friends and extended family who will miss his intellect, his warmth, and his wonderful sense of humor. His family wishes to express gratitude to the Hospice Care Team at Redstone. 

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 13th, 2026, at Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church, 4600 Old William Penn Highway, Murrysville, PA 15668. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Redstone Highlands Benevolent Care Fund.
