Robert “Bob” M. Oates, 78, of Murrysville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. He was born in Michigan in December 1943, son of the late Terence and Margaret Oates.
Bob was a member of Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church for 47 years where he was also an elder. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS degree in physics engineering and from the University of Pittsburgh with consecutive MS degrees in electrical engineering and industrial engineering. Bob initially worked at the Westinghouse R&D Center, where he was awarded 20 patents, and later worked at Respironics and NOMOS as the Vice President of Engineering before retiring to enjoy life and family. His favorite hobbies were biking, skiing, sailing, boating, guitar, stargazing, flying airplanes, campfires, wood working, and treating the whole family to happy hour. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending his time watching his children and grandchildren grow up; his real joy was celebrating time with his family.
Bob will be missed by Judith K. Oates, his wife of 50 years; three sons, Robert (Kelly) Oates, Terence (Jennifer) Oates, Michael (Rachel) Oates; nine grandchildren, Katie, Rebecca, Molly, Madelynn, Oliver, Annabelle, Amelia, Luke, and Juliet; a sister, Margaret (Gary) Kulju; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.
