Ruth Elizabeth (Quackenbush) Russell

Ruth Elizabeth (Quackenbush) Russell, age 90, of Murrysville, PA, passed away on June 19 after a long, arduous journey with Alzheimer’s Disease.   She was the beloved wife of 67 years of the late Charles K. Russell and loving mother of Stephen (Mary) of Bolivia, NC, Gary (Cindy) of Imperial, PA and Jennifer (Anthony) Billanti of McMurray, PA.  She was the best Grammy to Eric Russell, Elizabeth Russell, Emily (Daniel) Bennett, Charles (Kimberly) Russell, Laura (Ryan) Squibbs, Erin Golden, Lindsey (Brian) Rodgers and great-grandchildren Luke and Grant Bennett.  She was also a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews throughout the country. 

Ruth spent her career as a nurse and always had a special love of working with children.  Her countless volunteering efforts included scout leader, Sunday school teacher, Meals on Wheels food preparer, and tireless cookie baker.  She co-founded the MINTEC (Ministry to Exceptional Children) program at Newlonsburg Presbyterian church over 50 years ago which is still functioning today.  She was a charter member of the Murrysville Area Professional Nurses Association and served as an officer several times.  

Ruth went to college later in life, earning a degree in Psychology at LaRoche University and graduating at the top of her class.  She was a voracious reader and instilled a love of reading into her children and grandchildren.  She loved playing cards, especially bridge, and was also a worthy opponent at Scrabble.  She loved to sew for her grandchildren and will be remembered for the many creative Halloween costumes that she painstakingly made for them.  Mostly, Ruth will be remembered as one who gave generously of herself, always putting others’ needs ahead of her own.  

There will be a memorial service at Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church, 4600 Old William Penn Highway, Murrysville, PA 15668 on Saturday, July 16 at 10:30 am.  Interment will be at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies at a later date.  Memorial donations can be made to the MINTEC program, by check to the Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church and noted MINTEC.  www.hartfuneralhomeinc.com
