Sandra Lee “Sandy” Markley, 87, of Plum, passed away late on Sunday, November 17, 2024. She was born September 11, 1937, in Munhall, PA, daughter of the late Charles and Euphemia “Faye” (Russell) Nuss. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by numerous aunts, uncles, and her dear friend, Barbara Tomer.
She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh ("Pitt") in 1960 with a BS in Nursing. She worked as an RN, first at Children’s Hospital, then at Columbia Hospital, and eventually as a home healthcare nurse.
Sandy is survived by three children, Robert A. “Bob” (Christina) Markley Jr., Todd R. Markley, Kristen S. (Mike Savario) Markley; four grandchildren, Hannah, Cecilia, Kami, Mella; friend and former husband, Robert “Bob” Markley Sr.; and several cousins, Nancy Sue Stalnecker, Wayne (Marilyn) Stalnecker, Carlyle (Joan) Russell; and her two cats, Charlie and Archie.
Sandy was a vibrant, adventurous, and inspiring Spirit, full of love and light. A natural caregiver, she nurtured and cared for her three children, four grandchildren, and extended family, including her aging mother, aunts, and uncle. She created a strong foundation of love and community, fostering close ties with friends, like the Morrisons, even after they moved to England. Her devotion and support made her a rock for her family in tough times.
Sandy cherished family vacations—camping, beach trips, cross-country train journeys to explore the Northwest, and adventures “across the pond” to England.
An active church member and choir singer, Sandy was also a passionate advocate for social justice. Her joyful spirit and love for life shone brightly. She touched so many lives. She always had a warm smile, and made everyone feel welcome and loved.
She shared many joyful adventures with her dear friend, Barb Tomer. She had a “Sisterhood” of loving friends in Murrysville. And she gained another community of friends through her travels to Melissa Etheridge concerts across the U.S., Amsterdam, and London. She lived in Falls Village in Plum for 25 years where generous neighbors cared for her and her pets.
