Thomas J. Sweeney of Murrysville, passed peacefully on October 11, 2023, at home surrounded by family at the age of 94. Tom was the beloved husband of Marylou (Abel) Sweeney “Schultz” for 67 years and a long-time member of Mother of Sorrows Church in Murrysville. He was born October 9, 1929, in East Pittsburgh, to the late John and Nora Sweeney. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers Daniel and John Sweeney. Tom was the brother of Mary Margaret Rapp; father of Kathleen Love, Patricia (William) Smith, Mary Ann (John) Lloyd, Thomas Sweeney, and Maureen Sweeney; grandfather of 14: Nora (Gerry) Hudson, Sean Curler, Rachael (Alexander) Baughman, Ryan Love, Alexander (Torie) Smith, Michael (Elizabeth) Smith; Emily (Riley) Winstead, Tyler Smith, Megan (Brett) Johns, Katey (Jake Newkirk) Lloyd, Christopher Lloyd, Bridget Lloyd, Thomas Sweeney, and Mollie Sweeney; great-grandfather of 10: Airianna Hudson, Gianna Hudson, Troy Curler, Dean Curler, Mieko Baughman, Xander Baughman, Ezekiel Baughman, Maura Smith, Charlotte Smith, and Avery Johns; and Uncle Tom to numerous nieces and nephews.
Tom graduated St. Williams High School in 1947 and entered the Westinghouse apprentice program. Tom served in the Navy during the Korean war and following his service, Tom received his engineering degree from Carnegie Tech. He worked as an engineer and manager for Westinghouse Research and Development his entire career and retired after 40 years. Tom “Pop” most loved spending time with family, working on “projects,” and swinging on his back porch looking over their yard and creek, or the “Moors” as he called it. He enjoyed playing golf, growing too many tomatoes, finding a great deal at 380 Auction, and assigning nicknames. He especially loved Pittsburgh sports, playing the harmonica, and singing Irish pub songs with family at get togethers. His sense of humor, quick wit, and no-nonsense advice will be greatly missed. “Schlafen sie gut” Pop.
