Van Smith

Vanler “Van” Smith Jr.  86, of Murrysville, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2022, at William Penn Care Center, Jeannette. He was born July 13, 1935, in Pittsburgh, son of the late Vanler and Rachel Pusey Smith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Carl Barker.

Van was employed by McKesson Chemical & General Chemical, after retirement he was employed by Bondi Printing & Elite Limo, where he was so proud of the many people he chauffeured including many Steelers & Pirates as well as Colin Powell, John Major, Robert Redford, Madeleine Albright, Jane Goodall & Fergie to name a few. His last job was with Hart Funeral Home, Inc. He was an avid golfer, Steeler fan & enjoyed feeding his deer & turkeys. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels & Forbes Hospital as well as delivering Avon for his wife & got to be known as A-Van.

He was a member of Murrysville Alliance Church in addition to The Pgh Chemical Assoc. where he was president in 1975 & 1984, entertainment chairman in 1985 & general chairman in 1987.

Van will be dearly missed by his wife of over 41 years, Phyllis Barker Smith; four children, Bret (Sandy) Smith, Ft Myers, Fl, Lance (Karen) Smith, Coeur D’Alene, ID, Dirk (Lorie) Smith Export, PA and David Ferri, Sisters, OR, (Georgina Ramos - CA).  His three grandchildren, Tyler Smith, Jeremy (Laura) Smith and Justin (Alyssa) Smith; a nephew, Wayne Barker and a sister-in-law, Dora Barker.

Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 am Thursday, at Murrysville Alliance Church where a Memorial Service will be held at 11 am with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Guardian Angel Pug Rescue, 259 Derbytown Road, Latrobe, PA 15650, or to Murrysville Alliance Church, 4130 Old William Penn Hwy, Murrysville, PA 15668.
